Gentle Care You Can Feel Confident About

One of the biggest concerns many parents have is whether chiropractic care is safe for babies and children.

Care for infants and children looks very different than care for adults. Techniques are extremely gentle, specific, and adapted to each child’s age, size, comfort level, and needs.

Every treatment plan is personalized, and parents are always part of the process.

Some frequently asked questions:

Why do children see chiropractic doctors?
Children’s bodies are constantly growing, developing, and adapting to the physical demands of everyday life. A well-established principle known as Wolff’s Law explains that bones grow and remodel in response to the stresses placed upon them. For healthy skeletal development, proper joint motion, posture, and movement patterns are essential to help distribute these forces evenly throughout the body.

During periods of rapid growth—often called growth spurts—children can experience changes in balance, coordination, and flexibility. Ensuring that the muscles and joints are functioning optimally during these stages may help support healthy movement and development.

At the same time, your child’s nervous system is developing at an incredible rate. The nervous system includes the brain, spinal cord, and millions of nerves that coordinate movement, process information, and regulate nearly every function in the body. Just as healthy joint movement supports proper bone development, movement also plays an important role in supporting nervous system development.

A key part of this process is proprioception—the body’s ability to sense its position and movement in space. This constant communication between the joints, muscles, and nervous system helps children develop coordination, balance, body awareness, and motor skills as they grow.

Pediatric chiropractic care focuses on supporting healthy movement, joint function, and nervous system communication, helping children navigate the many physical changes that occur throughout their developmental years.

How young can babies be?
Babies can be assessed and treated very early in life. Dr. Kelly has cared for infants who were just a few days old.

In fact, many newborns under one month of age are so relaxed during their visit that they sleep through much of their assessment and treatment.

Whether your baby is a newborn, a few weeks old, or several months old, care is always adapted to support their growth, comfort, and overall well-being.

Is chiropractic care safe for infants?
When provided by a healthcare professional with specialized training in pediatric care, chiropractic treatment / manual therapy for infants are considered very gentle and safe. Techniques are carefully adapted to an infant’s size, age, and stage of development.

Unlike adult chiropractic care, infant treatment does not involve forceful movements or traditional spinal adjustments. Instead, it consists of gentle hands-on techniques, soft tissue work, stretching, and movement-based therapies. Many parents describe the experience as looking more like a gentle massage than a typical adult chiropractic treatment.

The primary focus of pediatric care is to support healthy movement, comfort, and development while ensuring your baby remains relaxed and comfortable throughout the visit.

Will my baby be adjusted?

If appropriate and with your consent, your infant may receive gentle, age-appropriate manual therapy during their visit. Treatment may include soft tissue techniques, gentle stretching and movement, fascial release, and craniosacral therapy to support comfort, mobility, and overall function.

Infant chiropractic care looks very different from chiropractic treatment for adults. Techniques are specifically adapted to a baby’s developing body and involve light, gentle pressure. There are no forceful or “thrust” type adjustments used in pediatric care.

Every treatment is tailored to your child’s age, development, comfort level, and individual needs, with the goal of creating a calm and positive experience for both baby and parent.

Do adults receive treatment too?
Absolutely! While Dr. Kelly has a special interest in prenatal, pediatric, and family care, she welcomes and treats patients of all ages.

Whether you are seeking relief from pain and tension, recovering from an injury, looking to improve mobility, or simply wanting to support your overall health and wellness, chiropractic care can be tailored to your individual needs and goals.

What happens during the first visit?
Your first visit is designed to help us gain a thorough understanding of your health history, concerns, and goals for care.

The appointment will include:

A comprehensive health history and discussion of your concerns
A thorough physical examination
An explanation of the findings and recommended treatment plan
Treatment, if appropriate and with your consent
This process is similar for adults, youth, children, and infants, with assessments and treatment techniques tailored to each individual’s age, developmental stage, and specific needs.

Dr. Kelly’s goal is to ensure that every patient—and parent, when applicable—feels informed, comfortable, and confident throughout the visit.

When should I come in during pregnancy?
You can begin chiropractic care at any stage of pregnancy, and many patients choose to start early to help support comfort, mobility, and overall well-being throughout their pregnancy journey.

Chiropractic care provided by a healthcare professional with specialized prenatal training is considered safe and gentle for both mother and baby. Treatment techniques are carefully adapted to accommodate the physical changes that occur during each trimester.

Whether you are experiencing discomfort, preparing your body for birth, or simply looking to maintain optimal function during pregnancy, prenatal chiropractic care can be tailored to your individual needs at every stage.

What should I expect after chiropractic treatment?
Many adults notice an immediate improvement in mobility, flexibility, and overall comfort following their treatment. However, it is also common to experience mild soreness or tenderness for a day or two afterward.

This temporary soreness can feel similar to what you might experience after a new workout or increased physical activity. As joints begin moving more freely and muscles adapt to improved movement patterns, your body may need a short period of time to adjust.

These post-treatment sensations are typically mild and short-lived. Most patients find that any temporary soreness is followed by improved movement, reduced tension, and a greater sense of ease in their daily activities.

If you have any questions or concerns following your treatment, Dr. Kelly is always happy to discuss your experience and provide guidance.

Do I need ongoing care forever?
No. The frequency and duration of care are entirely your choice and depend on your individual health goals.

Some patients seek chiropractic care to address a specific concern, such as pain, injury, or limited mobility, and choose to discontinue care once their goals have been achieved. Others find value in ongoing care as part of their overall wellness routine to help support movement, function, and an active lifestyle.

At our clinic, we believe in providing recommendations based on your needs and goals while empowering you to make informed decisions about your care. Whether you are looking for short-term support or ongoing wellness care, we are happy to work with you to create a plan that feels right for you.

How long are appointments?

Initial Visit

Your first appointment with Dr. Kelly is approximately 45–60 minutes long. During this visit, she will:

  • Review your health history and current concerns
  • Complete a thorough physical examination
  • Discuss her findings and recommendations
  • Provide treatment, if appropriate and with your consent

This process is similar for adults, youth, children, and infants, with assessments and treatment tailored to each patient’s age, developmental stage, and individual needs.

Follow-Up Visits

Follow-up appointments are available in 15-minute or 30-minute sessions, depending on your goals and the type of care being provided.

For infants under 6 months of age, follow-up visits are scheduled for 30 minutes to allow ample time for feeding, comforting, parent questions, home-care recommendations, and gentle treatment.

Adults, youth, and children may choose either a 15-minute or 30-minute follow-up appointment based on their needs, treatment plan, and personal preference.

Our goal is to ensure that every appointment provides enough time for thorough, individualized care while fitting comfortably into your schedule.
